Who this tool is for
Viticulturists.
VineLOGIC works for all major grape-growing regions in Australia.
Questions this tool answers
- When is my grape variety likely to reach budburst / flowering?
- What are my likely grape yields?
What this tool does
VineLOGIC allows you to investigate how much or how little difference your decisions could make in a real vineyard.
It uses real data from major Australian grape-growing regions:
- historical weather
- soil type
- water salinity and depth
Inputs
To set up a vineyard scenario, you follow a 10-step process, where you choose:
- weather (region, year)
- variety and rootstock
- vineyard (pruning system, trellis, vine reserves)
- soil
- hydrology (water table and tile drain depth, groundwater salinity)
- initial conditions (simulation start time, initial soil water)
- vineyard floor (partial or full ground cover irrigation, cover crop)
- irrigation schedule
- irrigation water salinity
Outputs
VineLOGIC presents tables and graphs showing:
- budburst date (when the vines will become active)
- veraison date (when the berries will begin to ripen)
- grape maturation date (when the berries can be harvested)
- potential yield
- likely times and severity of stress
Examples will be available on this site soon
Reliability
VineLOGIC uses historical climate scenarios to make its predictions. It does not handle weather forecasts and does not incorporate the effects of a changing climate.
History
The VineLOGIC project was started by CSIRO Plant Industry with collaborators from the Department of Primary Industries, Victoria. It was further developed through the Cooperative Research Centre for Viticulture.
